OVERVIEW
Branding for Hypaspist, a mixed martial arts gym based in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
the brief
Named after Alexander the Great's personal guard, Hypaspist MMA was born from the mind of head coach Tom Hepburn.
Hypaspist was the result of years of knowledge and experience in the sport of mixed martial arts. As a new venture for the martial arts coach, and with a surge in popularity, the brand required a logo to build on an early concept, and encapsulate everything the brand is about and represents.

“In what felt like a very short timespan, Flavr came back to me with an idea that was exceptionally well-researched and executed; something that incorporated both the historical theme of the business name and the modern nature of it. The meticulous level of detail that was contained in such a clean and simple design is hugely impressive to me, and – all hyperbole aside – I consider it to be the perfect logo for my business.”
the solution
Creating a logo worthy of the history.
The Hypaspist logo needed to appear modern and adaptable in order to future-proof the brand and work for different formats – social media, merchandise, digital, and print. The icon aimed to retain the shape and compactness of a shield, whilst featuring the symbol from a Hypaspist shield – the Vergina Sun. Conveniently, the Vergina Sun has eight prominent extrusions from it’s central point, so this was balanced with the eight-sided octagon for further association with mixed martials arts.
The result – a logo fit for a king.
